After a remarkable performance in 2023, Tianyi Lu is back on the OSM podium to conduct Tchaikovsky’s poignant Symphony no.?5.

After her remarkable performance in 2023, Tianyi Lu returns to the OSM. She is joined by pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, undisputed champion of Bartók’s music who performs the composer’s exquisitely poetic Concerto no. 3, infused with elements of Hungarian folklore. This work’s relative tranquility is paired with the tormented inflections of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 5, through which this composer related his most profound personal anxieties.

Tianyi Lu

Conductor

Known internationally for her thrilling energy on the podium, Tianyi Lu was First Prize winner of both the 2020 Sir Georg Solti International Conductors Competition and the International Conducting Competition “Guido Cantelli” in Italy. Shecollaborates with major orchestras worldwide. In the 20242025 season, Tianyi Lu make her debut at the BBC Proms in London with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, as well as other debut appearances with the New York Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony Orchestra and hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt. Return engagements include appearances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, Turku Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Tianyi Lu completed her Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting with Distinction at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2015. Lu was a former Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Assistant Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra from 2017 to 2019.

Pierre-Laurent Aimard is widely acclaimed as an authority on the music of our time, and has enjoyed close collaborations with leading composers such as Lachenmann, Carter, Birtwistle, Kurtág, Stockhausen, Stroppa, Boulez, and Messiaen. His critically acclaimed recordings include the complete piano concertos of Bartók with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Messiaen’s Visions de l’Amen and Catalogue d’oiseaux, as well as Beethoven’s Hammerklavier Sonata and Eroica Variations. Aimard is the recipient of numerous accolades including the International Ernst von Siemens Music Prize and the Leonie Sonning Music Prize, Denmark’s most coveted music award. Highlights of the 2024–2025 season include appearances at Carnegie Hall, Musikfest Berlin, Seoul Arts Centre, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Amsterdam Muziekgebouw and Teatro alla Scala, alongside concerto performances with NDR Elbphilharmonie, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Intercontemporain, and Philadelphia Orchestra.
